Submitted to OnFocus – On January 14, 2021 at 3:54pm, the Marathon County Sheriffs Office responded to the Day’s Inn in Rib Mountain for a report of a woman with a gun in a hotel room.

Deputies arrived at the hotel and attempted to make contact with the female. Deputies and hotel staff worked to evacuate the affected floor of the hotel. Deputies, in conjunction with the Crisis Assessment Response Team (CART) and Crisis Negotiators with the Sheriffs Office Crisis Negotiations Team worked for more than 7 hours to resolve the situation peacefully.

The woman exited the hotel room and repeatedly paced the hallway with the firearm in hand. Negotiations continued during this time. Near midnight, less than lethal options were attempted but were ineffective. The woman pointed her firearm at deputies who in response shot the woman.

The woman was wounded but remained armed with the handgun. Negotiations continued until she put the firearm down. Medical attention was then rendered by law enforcement and EMS. The woman sustained injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening. No law enforcement officers or citizens were injured during the incident.

The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty per agency policy.

The investigation into this incident has been turned over to the Wausau Police Department and the Everest Metro Police Department. At this time, the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office will be not be making further comment due to the ongoing investigation.
