Marathon’s Drew Love, a 2023 graduate, excelled as a two sport athlete for the Red Raiders in basketball and football. We take an inside look at Love, to see what makes him tick with our world-famous interview, ‘Pancakes or Waffles?’

OnFocus: What subjects/classes have been your favorite, and why?

  • My favorite subject has been business, because I enjoy all of the processes and operations of running a business, and I could see myself trying to start one someday.

OnFocus:  What words of wisdom can you give to other student-athletes?

  • There is a time to be serious, but there are even more times to enjoy the memories you’re making and have as much fun with it as possible.

OnFocus: What are your hobbies?

  • Outside of basketball and football, my favorite things to do include golf, playing video games with friends, spending time with family, and shopping for things I know I’ll never buy.

OnFocus: Who is/was your first favorite teacher and why?

  • Probably my favorite teacher throughout high school was Mr. Bernarde. We got along very well, even to the point where he decided it’s not worth staying in Marathon after I graduate.

OnFocus: What is the most unusual food you have eaten?

  • This last spring on vacation I ordered escargot for dinner, which is literally cooked snails. I give it a 6/10.

OnFocus: What is your favorite music to listen to?

  • During the summer, my music taste turns into that of a 14 year old girl. Lots of Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Katy Perry. Otherwise it’s mostly rap and hip-hop.

OnFocus:  What are your plans after high school?

  • I’ll be attending Ripon College in the fall, majoring in Business Management and/or Business Education as well as playing linebacker on the football team. Ideally, in the future I would be able to work in administration at a high school while coaching basketball at the same time.

OnFocus:  If they made a movie about you, and your life,  what would it be called?

  • “They Don’t Know Me Son”

OnFocus: What sports did you play throughout your high school career?

  • I played basketball and football all four years, with three years of varsity play in each.

OnFocus: Which teammate would you not want to be stranded with on a deserted island?

  • Grant Warren, because he has no survival skills.

OnFocus:  What are some memorable moments you have had as an athlete?

  • Winning back to back conference championships in basketball, especially the championship game at home against Newman this last year.

OnFocus:  Who are your favorite athletes and/or teams?

  • My favorite basketball player of all time is Kobe Bryant because of how he approached the game mentally, and my favorite football player of all time is Luke Kuechly for the same reasons.

OnFocus: What do you enjoy most about competing in front of family, friends and fans?

  • Being able to display the unseen work that I’ve put in over the years.

OnFocus:  Do you have a funny or unusual moment(s) you have experienced in sports?

  • When me, Cooper, Tyler, and Mason had to go break into Grant’s house to make sure he was coming to team breakfast at Blue Willow.

OnFocus: What’s the best thing about being a student-athlete?

  • That it’s a great way to grow relationships with people who you wouldn’t have otherwise given much thought to.

OnFocus:  What words of wisdom can you give to other student-athletes?

  • There is a time to be serious, but there are even more times to enjoy the memories you’re making and have as much fun with it as possible.

OnFocus: Lastly, pancakes or waffles?

  • Waffles
