MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – On March 4, 2012, the Colby Volunteer Fire Department (now part of the Central Fire & EMS Department) and other departments responded to a report of smoke coming from the Abbotsford Movie Theater on First Street in Abbotsford.

While fighting the fire, the roof collapsed on firefighting crews inside the building, trapping and taking the life of Jamison Kampmeyer, a 34-year-old father of three.

Kampmeyer served as not only a volunteer firefighter, but also as a detective for the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department. He also served on the Marathon County S.W.A.T team and worked as a field training officer.

Now, 10 years after the incident, his wife Amy still resides in the Colby area where Kampmeyer’s memory lives on through a memorial run during Colby Cheese Days.

In 2014, Colby High School graduate Jacob Miller raised funds and help put together a memorial outside of the Central Fire Department to honor Kampmeyer and the sacrifice he made. Kampmeyer’s kids, Jack, Henry and Miles, were all recognized as honorary firefighters as well.

Kampmeyer was born on May 25, 1977 and graduated from Colby High School and the University of River Falls. He then attended the Northcentral Technical College Police Recruit Academy.
