MARSHFIELD – Marshfield overcame a quick goal by Medford with four unanswered scores and defeated the Raiders 5-2 in a nonconference boys hockey game Thursday night at the Marshfield Youth Ice Arena.
Medford’s Carter Pernsteiner scored in the opening minute, but later in the first period the Tigers got their offense rolling in a big way.
Marshfield (5-2) scored four goals in the final 7½ minutes of the first period to build a three-goal lead.
Evan Weister tied it and Nate Boson put the Tigers ahead for good. Isaac Wellens added a goal, and just 10 seconds later, Weister scored again to put Marshfield up 4-1.
Pernsteiner for Medford (1-4) and Ryan Krueger for Marshfield added goals in the third period to finish the scoring.
“Medford played a smart game, and made some smart plays against us,” Marshfield coach Eric Bowman said. “We battled through a lot of penalties tonight, and our special teams were solid when shorthanded. We can not continue to play shorthanded. There are a lot of good power plays that we will be seeing in the near future.
“Up until tonight, we had been playing with solid discipline. We scored timely goals when we needed to, and that allowed us to get out of this game with a win.”
Medford goalkeeper A.J. Adleman was busy for the Raiders, saving 51 shots. A.J. Trierweiler had 20 saves in goal for Marshfield.
Marshfield plays another nonconference game at Rhinelander on Friday.
