MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team kept its Wisconsin Valley Conference title hopes alive with a 2-2 tie against first-place D.C. Everest on Thursday at Griese Park.
The Tigers move to 8-7-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and remain three points behind D.C. Everest (5-6-6, 5-0-5 WVC) in the standings with two games remaining.
Marshfield finishes its WVC season next week with games at Wausau East on Tuesday and at Wausau West on Thursday. D.C. Everest hosts Stevens Point on Tuesday and Wisconsin Rapids next Thursday.
Stevens Point is one point ahead of Marshfield and Wausau West, and two points behind Everest.
Marshfield pulled out to a 2-0 lead by halftime after a goal from Kyle Tremelling and a penalty kick by Kade McManus.
Everest stormed back in the final 23 minutes as Tamiriat Knutson scored twice to even the game, the final goal coming with just 5:33 remaining.
“The first half was the best we probably played all year,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “The midfield was clicking and the boys were communicating. We were creating opportunities and were up 2-0. In the second half we lost some of the control we had.
“We had a couple stupid fouls and gave them some set pieces that ended up hurting us and we had to settle for a tie. That was very disappointing. We are poised to play some really good soccer – tidy up on our fouls, mark up on the other teams key players better and finish just a bit better, and we are going to be very tough to beat.”
