MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at 6:00 p.m., the Marshfield Common Council will receive public input in the Council Chambers at City Hall on a proposal to ban the practice of declawing cats within the city of Marshfield. This will occur at the beginning of that evening’s regular Council meeting, and those wishing to comment will have up to 5 minutes to share their views on this subject. Mayor Lois Te Strake will have a sign-up sheet for citizens interested in speaking about the subject at the back of Council Chambers that evening.

If you cannot attend this meeting but still wish to provide comments for the Council’s consideration, you may provide your response to [email protected] or write a letter stating your name and address and drop it off at City Hall or through regular U.S. Mail.

Marshfield Area Pet Shelter issued the following statement in support of the ban:

“MAPS is strongly opposed to declawing cats due to the severe medical and behavioral problems the procedure can cause. We have seen first hand how the procedure can affect a cat’s health and behavior. A significant number of declawed unclaimed stray and surrendered cats have come to MAPS over the years and we feel it is time to bring attention to this inhumane procedure. We will be attending the Sept 12 meeting to express our support for the ban.”
