ANTIGO – The Marshfield boys golf team captured a regional title, edging Stevens Point by two shots to take first place at the WIAA Division 1 Boys Golf Regional on Tuesday at Bass Lake Country Club.
The Tigers had three top-10 finishers and had a team score of 333. Stevens Point was second with a 335, Wausau West had a 346 and Antigo shot a 348 to earn the four team spots in next week’s sectional.
Freshman Davis Rens had an 81 to tie for fifth place to lead Marshfield. Jaxon Bulgrin tied for seventh with an 82, Ben Baur tied for 10th with a 83, and Nate Boson shot an 87 for Marshfield’s top four scores. Cole Hanson also shot an 88 for the Tigers.
The top four golfers not on the qualifying teams also move on to the sectional.
Merrill’s Russell Dettmering, the three-time Wisconsin Valley Conference individual champion, won the regional title shooting a two-over par 73. Wausau East’s Carter Cygan was second with a 77, and D.C. Everest’s Sam Hagedorn (81) and Ben Peloquin (82) also earned individual qualifying spots at the sectional.
Evan Thomas led Stevens Point, finishing fourth with an 80.
The Division 1 sectional will be Wednesday, May 29, at New Richmond Golf Course. The top two teams and top three individuals not on the qualifying teams will move on to the 2019 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club in Madison on June 3-4.
