MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team won its third-straight game, topping Wausau West 4-1 in its Wisconsin Valley Conference finale Tuesday at Griese Park.
Nina Hashimoto scored three goals and Kate Schilling added another as the Tigers put up four goals in the first half to take a commanding lead.
Schilling assisted on the first two Hashimoto goals in the opening 21 minutes, and Hashimoto had the assist on Schilling’s goal with 6½ minutes to go before halftime.
After Wausau West took an early 1-0 lead, Marshfield held the Warriors scoreless the rest of the way behind a strong defensive effort by its midfield defense and goalkeeper Mikayla Brueggen, who had five saves.
“When the midfielders, especially the center mids control the ball and start the passing, our team really can click and then this rubs off on the other offensive players,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Paige Preston, Nicole Simon and Courtney Meyer do not get enough credit for the passing and teamwork, which starts there and moves up to our talented strikers. The outside mids have stepped up recently as well and make us a talented team to defend.”
Marshfield finishes its regular-season schedule with a 10-7-2 record and 6-4-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
Marshfield will host Antigo in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal next Tuesday, May 28, at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
