WAUSAU – Ana Paape scored with 11:18 left for the only goal in the game as the Marshfield girls soccer team topped Wausau West 1-0 on Thursday at West High School.
Marshfield improves to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with the victory. West falls to 0-3 and 0-2 in conference play.
Mikayla Brueggen earned the shutout win in goal for the Tigers, saving all eight shots she saw.
The goal was Paape’s first as a varsity player for the Tigers.
“Both teams played stingy defense as the offenses could not muster many good scoring opportunities,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Playing to a 0-0 halftime score, we talked to Ana as she had an attempt in the first half carrying the ball to the opponents 18-yard line about, but she passed on a shot attempt and passed to a teammate. We just told Ana if presented with the opportunity in the future to pull the trigger and take the shot. She did just that taking the ball deep on the defensive end and getting by two or three defenders, and this time took the shot on goal and scored the game-winner.”
Marshfield hosts Ashwaubenon at 5 p.m. Monday at Griese Park.
