Sexual Assault Prevention Program for Seniors at Marshfield High School

Submitted by School District of Marshfield

Sexual assault is recognized as a significant concern nation-wide. Young adults, 15 to 25, are currently the most at risk group for sexual assault. As a school district and as a community we asked ourselves, “What can we do?”

The School District of Marshfield, in partnership with several community organizations and businesses, decided to provide education and practical self-care techniques to equip students as they prepare to leave high school prevent sexual assault.

Marshfield High School, along with The Personal Development Center, Marshfield Police Department and Ki Nagare Dojo presented “Safety After High School” – a sexual assault prevention program targeted for seniors at Marshfield High School.

The program was scheduled purposefully just before prom, graduation, and students moving on to post-secondary institutions and work. The program consisted of three primary sections: a large group presentation and discussion regarding the facts and risks related to sexual assault, a small group discussion and activities designed to help students develop strategies to reduce their risk or get out of difficult situations and a basic self-defense/personal safety techniques class.

Overwhelmingly the students rated the program as useful, interesting and worth their time. Students stated they feel more prepared and safe as they leave high school to help themselves and their friends.

Anecdotally, students who had this presentation last year and have graduated continue to talk about the program and its positive impact as they have entered college or the work force.

The Safety After High School program could not have happened without the cooperation and flexibility of all the District’s teachers and staff, including but not limited to the Joanne Greenlee (School Social Worker), Krystal Salzmann (High School Counselor), the Technology Department, Custodial Staff, Jason Wilhelm (Principal), Dave Roeglin (Assistant Principal), and Mike Nanstad (Assistant Principal).

Of course an event like this could not have happened without the efforts, contributions and donations from the following community members and businesses:

  • Sara Flynn and the staff at The Personal Development Center
  • Ki Nagare Dojo, Jason Tucker and 10 trained volunteers to teach self-defense
  • The Marshfield Police Department
  • Scotty’s Pizza
  • Marshfield Clinic
  • Marshfield High School Student Council
  • The Tiger Booster Club

This was truly a community effort. Thanks to all who participated. For more information, please contact: Joanne Greenlee 715.384.4747 or Krystal Salzmann 715.387.8464.
