OnFocus – Marshfield Medical Center Credit Union (MMCCU) will be hosting a “Buy a Pie” fundraiser throughout the month of May to raise funds for Marshfield Clinic Health System Foundation.

Those wishing to participate can donate $1, $5, or $10 and write their name on a corresponding paper, which is then displayed at MMCCU. (Donations can also be made online.) Staff members at MMCCU will be competing to raise the most funds between May 1-31. All funds will be donated to MCHS Foundation to support Child Life and Expressive Therapies at Marshfield’s Children’s Hospital.

The fundraiser coincides with David Murphy assuming his new role as President on May 1. The MMCCU staff member that raises the most funds will get to “throw” a pie in Murphy’s face. The credit union will match the first $500 donated, and Murphy will personally match the second $500 donated (for a total match up to $1,000).

“I’m happy to volunteer my face for this worthwhile cause!” said Murphy. “MMCCU typically sponsors the Child Life Bash to support Child Life and Expressive Therapies at Marshfield Children’s Hospital. With this year’s event not taking place in-person this year, we wanted to do something fun to support a great program.”

Child Life and Expressive Therapies facilitate a positive experience for pediatric patients undergoing difficult procedures, surgeries, receiving ongoing care such as chemotherapy and children of adult patients. Child Life Specialists are trained professionals with expertise in helping children and families through challenging situations in a health care setting.

They work to normalize a child’s environment and reduce the stress of medical experiences by increasing understanding of medical procedures though medical and therapeutic play before and after procedures, providing support, coping skills and distraction techniques during treatment, and enhancing positive physical, cognitive, emotional and social interactions with music and pet therapy.

“It’s an incredible program they offer children and families, and we are happy to do what we can to help,” said Murphy. “With our membership being health care workers, we felt this was a great fit for our membership and mission.”
