Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) The Veterans Council of Marshfield won’t move forward with its annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, even without a public gathering veterans will still be honored with the placement of flags at area cemeteries with assistance from American Legion, Boy and Girl Scouts, and other volunteers.

The cancellation of the public ceremonies for Memorial Day is being echoed across the country and is a rare occurrence. For the local veterans, even weather doesn’t stop the festivities.

“Rain, shine, it’s never stopped us before,” said Mike Feirer, city alderman and Vietnam War veteran.

Close to 2,000 flags will be placed Saturday morning and remain until after Memorial Day.
