MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Marshfield’s Fire and Police Commission approved the addition of a third K9 Unit for Marshfield Police Department at their meeting Thursday morning. Police Chief Jody Geurink recommended the addition now due to a healthy K9 fund (most of which is donated or earned) and due to the aging of the current K9 unit.
“In addition to drug intervention, they also help us track missing people, track criminal who are attempting to escape, search buildings for people who may be hiding, search for evidence that may have been discarded, and a whole lot more,” said Geurink.
Marshfield’s K-9 Program comprises two Patrol Officers paired with two canines. Currently K9 Rika serves with Officer Sam Fox and K9 Zso serves with Officer Kelly Carolfi. Both officers and dogs undergo continuous training to maintain compliance, certification, and excellence in their roles, contributing to community service.
The canines are fully integrated into the law enforcement family, and the department strives to maximize their utilization. Marshfield Police Department has four patrol shifts and only two K9 units, so eventually hope to have a K9 available to all units.
