Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) Marshfield Police Department hosted its 2nd annual Shop with a Cop event on Dec. 12.
Local officers paired up with kids in need to go Christmas shopping at Target, Fleet Farm, and Walmart. After assisting ten kids in its first year, the program expanded to include 17 Marshfield youth. Each participant gets $120 to spend, half on themselves and then for others they choose.
“The Marshfield Professional Police Association and the Marshfield Police Department feel that this is a great way to give back to the community and to build positive relationships with the youth who participate,” said Julie Leu-Martinek, School Resource Officer. “The kids are truly appreciative of receiving the extra money and being able to pick gifts out for themselves and their loved ones.”
Law enforcement agencies nationwide host their own Shop with a Cop events as a way to positively interact with their communities and show that officers are approachable and willing to help.
Marshfield’s event was fully funded by the Marshfield Professional Police Association, Fleet Farm, Target, Wal-Mart, and Pepsi. Once the youth finished shopping, they were brought back to the police station to enjoy donated Scotty’s pizza and wrap their presents.
