MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – The Marshfield Police Department is investigating a case of fraud in which a local resident lost $61,000 after being targeted in a sweepstakes scam.
According to the police report, the individual received a phone call claiming they had won $17 million through a Publishers Clearing House giveaway. The caller instructed the resident to send money to cover taxes before the winnings could be released. Believing the claim to be legitimate, the individual mailed $61,000 in cash to an address in Florida.
The incident reportedly began in spring 2024 and was reported to police on March 19, 2025. The case has been forwarded to the department’s detective bureau for further investigation.
Authorities continue to warn the public about ongoing scams that often target older adults, urging individuals to remain cautious of unsolicited phone calls and never to send money to unknown parties.
Anyone who suspects they may have been the victim of a similar scam is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
