MERRILL – Marshfield Post 54 used a seven-run fourth inning and held on to beat Merrill 9-4 in a Senior American Legion baseball game Thursday.
A scoreless game entering the fourth inning quickly turned into an offensive battle as the Blue Devils (4-5, 2-2 Wisconsin Valley Legion League) scored seven runs to take a big lead.
Merrill responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning before Marshfield pitcher Cole Hediger settled in an threw three scoreless innings to finish off a complete game. Hediger finished with three strikeouts and four walks.
Marshfield added a pair of runs in the seventh inning to provide the final margin.
Isaiah Baierl and Devyn Palmer each had three hits and an RBI out of the top two spots in the Marshfield lineup.
Jacob Earll added two hits and five RBIs, and Preston Wagner, Luke Erickson and Jaeger Johnson also had two hits each for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils, winners of four of their last five games, will return to action Sunday with a 6 p.m. home game against Antigo at Jack Hackman Field. Antigo High School’s team won the Division 2 state title at the recent WIAA State Baseball Tournament and its Legion team is off to a 3-0 start in the Wisconsin Valley Legion League.
