Marshfield softball holds on to beat D.C. Everest in WIAA Division 1 regional final

WESTON – Marshfield scored in its four at-bats and held off a late rally to top D.C. Everest 8-5 in a WIAA Division 1 softball regional final on Thursday at D.C. Everest High School.

Jenna Jakobi had three hits, including a home run, drove in three runs and scored three times out of the leadoff spot for the Tigers. Maddie Mews had three hits, and Jordan Pretsch had two hits and a two RBIs to help lead Marshfield to the win against the Evergreens, who had beat Marshfield twice during the regular season.

Sixth-seeded Marshfield (16-9) will host a Division 1 sectional semifinal against No. 7 seed Chippewa Falls (19-6) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds. Chippewa Falls upset No. 2 seed Superior 3-1 on Thursday. No. 1 seed Stevens Point (21-6) hosts No. 4 seed Wisconsin Rapids (17-9) in the other sectional semifinal. The winners meet in the sectional final on May 30 at D.C. Everest with a berth in the state tournament on the line.

Marshfield took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Jenna Jakobi scored on a two-out error before D.C. Everest responded.

Haley Larson singled with two outs and Calista Fuehrer ripped a two-run homer to put the Evergreens on top 2-1.

Marshfield came back with six runs over its next three at-bats.

In the second inning, Jenna Jakobi had an RBI single and Pretsch knocked in two with a double to put Marshfield back on top 4-2.

Jenna Jakobi hit a two-run homer in the third and Madalen Bornbach knocked in Brooklyn Bohman with a single in the fourth to give the Tigers a 7-2 lead.

Haylee Schmidt hit a leadoff homer in the sixth for Everest and that was matched by an RBI single by Taylor Barwick in the seventh for the Tigers.

Everest scored twice in the bottom of the seventh after a pair of Marshfield errors, but Tigers pitcher Courtney Donahue struck out two of the final three batters to finish off the win.

Donahue finished with six strikeouts and three walks in the complete-game effort for Marshfield.
