MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Marshfield Utilities will begin painting fire hydrants along Central Avenue in Marshfield this summer to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) identification standards.
The NFPA hydrant color code allows firefighters to quickly identify how many gallons per minute (GPM) will flow from a hydrant. Hydrants will be painted yellow with the cap color indicating the flow rate.
Red caps indicate below 500 GPM, Orange 500 to 999 GPM, Green 1,000 – 1,499 GPM, and Blue 1,500 GPM or more. The goal for this year is to complete the painting of 150 hydrants. The project will begin at the South end of Central Avenue and move North. There are approximately 1000 hydrants to update over several years.
