Marshfield (OnFocus) – A recent situation in Marshfield is a good reminder to be aware of one’s surroundings at all times.

Last week, a woman reported to police that she was in a local grocery store alone when she noticed a male following her throughout the store. After feeling like there was something uncomfortable about the situation, she asked for someone to walk her to her vehicle. Outside, the man was waiting, but once realizing the woman was not alone, he left the area.

Marshfield Police Department is investigating the incident, but in the meantime is using the situation to remind everyone to be aware of their surroundings, trust their guts, and contact them if something feels “off.”

“One of the best things to do is trust your gut,” said Assistant Police Chief Pat Zeps. “Stay in a public space until you can find someone to escort you to your car. Be aware of your surroundings.”

Another basic safety step everyone should do is to inform someone of their destination and when they expect to be home. That way if something happens, law enforcement can more easily trace their movements.

Zeps reminds everyone that they can always contact the police department for help.

“You are not bothering us in any way. We’re certainly happy to come and help someone get to their car safely,” he said. “If something seems off, please report it. That’s what we’re here for. We’d rather vet something and have it be nothing rather than it be something serious that wasn’t called in.”
