Marshfield’s doubles team of Jared Cordova-Will Fay qualify for state meet at WIAA Division 1 boys tennis sectional

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Marshfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Jared Cordova and Will Fay are moving on the state tournament after it won two matches at the WIAA Division 1 Boys Tennis Sectional on Wednesday at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.

Cordova and Fay (14-2) defeated Mitch Vanyo-Nick Mason of Chippewa Falls, 6-0, 6-3, and Victor Kaufmann-Jackson Trunkel of Menomonie 6-1, 6-2, to reach the No. 1 doubles final.

Max Loen and Donylo Ripeckyj of Eau Claire Memorial beat Cordova and Fay, 6-0, 6-1, in the championship match.

The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and doubles, and the winners in No. 2 singles and doubles qualify for the 2019 WIAA State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, on May 30-June 1.

Cordova is going to state for the third-straight year. Last year, Cordova teamed with Braedon Corteen at No. 1 doubles. They lost their first match at the tournament. In 2017, Cordova and partner Derek Reckner won their first match before bowing out in the second round.

Ryan Paulman (12-2) finished third at the sectional at No. 3 singles for the Tigers. He lost his semifinal match to Hudson’s Kade Nickerson, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, before winning the third-place match over Onalaska’s Jay Yoo, 6-2, 6-1.

Marshfield’s No. 2 doubles team of Lucas Paulman and Sam Roherty (12-4) lost both of its matches to finish fourth. Paulman-Roherty lost to Eau Claire Memorial’s Will Hayes-Grant Wolfe, 6-0, 6-3, and Hudson’s Brett Covey-Mitchell Drost, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Eau Claire Memorial won the team title as it won all seven flights and finished with 56 points. Hudson was second with 33 points and Marshfield tied with Onalaska for third with 21 points.

Eau Claire Memorial earned a spot in the 2019 WIAA State Team Boys Tennis Tournament in Madison on June 7-8.
