How to Spot a Brake Problem

The ability to stop is an important one for a vehicle, and before winter really hits, Medford Chrysler Center is encouraging vehicle owners to make sure their brakes are operating at full capacity.

As a general rule, brake pads should be replaced at about every 50,000 miles — though every car is different.

“If a vehicle is making squeaking or squealing noises, it’s time to bring your vehicle in for service,” said Ray Johnson, General Manager at Medford Chrysler Center. “Having your brakes checked by a professional can help prevent a dangerous driving situation from occurring.”

Other things to watch for include a deep metal grinding sound or a vibrating/pulsation in brake pedal or steering wheel when brakes are applied. All of these can indicate that your braking system is in need of repair.

“If you suspect a brake problem, the sooner you bring your vehicle in the less damage you will do to your vehicle’s brake system and the more safe you will be,” said Johnson. “Our service team can evaluate whether your brakes need replacing or if something else is going on with your vehicle.”

To help prolong brake system component life, vehicle owners are encouraged to rotate their tires every oil change. This will help with tire wear and prolong tire life and also allow the technician to visually inspect brakes at every service to ensure brakes are wearing evenly and catch any possible problems before they arise.
