Marshfield – Central Wisconsin is filled with top performers who are excelling and standing out above the rest.
In the race for the OnFocus Athlete of the Week, February 14 – February 20, it came down to the end with just 37 votes separating first and second place.
Brady Hupf of Medford Boys Basketball picked up 344 votes to take the top prize, ahead of second place finisher David Gibbs of Port Edwards Boys Basketball, who collected 307 votes.
Third place went to Hannah Merkel, Marshfield Gymnastics, with 219 votes. Fourth place was picked up by Wisconsin Rapids Lincolnd Boys Basketball’s Grant Flory, with 144 votes.
OnFocus Athlete of the Week Nominees, February 14 – February 20
- David Gibbs, Port Edwards Boys Basketball – Gibbs came up huge for the Blackhawks in their 64-59 Regional Final win over Columbus Catholic. Gibbs had 22 points and was 3 of 5 from three-point land.
- Hannah Merkel, Marshfield Gymnastics – One week after leading Marshfield to the team title at the GNC Large Schools Meet, Merkel punched her ticket to state at sectionals. Merkel finished second on the bars and took fifth place on the All-Around.
- Brady Hupf, Medford Boys Basketball – Hupf had a career-high 21 points Saturday evening in Medford’s 64-54 win over Rhinelander.
- Grant Flory, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Boys Basketball – An injury limited the Red Raider senior this season, but Flory came back at the end of the season to shine. Flory led Rapids to a regional quarterfinal win over Holmen, scoring 23 points and pulling down 21 rebounds. Flory then poured in 25 points in Rapids’ regional semifinal loss to Eau Claire Memorial. In 10 games for Rapids this season, Flory averaged 21.8 points a game and made 22 of 38 three pointers on the season.
- Dru Sabatke, Central WI Storm Girls Hockey(nominated online) – In the Storm’s 4-3 loss in the WIAA Girls Hockey State Semifinal Game, Sabatke picked up three assists.
