Meet Nathan Saeger

Where are you from?:
I was born in Wisconsin Rapids and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1999. I attended UW-La Crosse from 1999-2004. I graduated in May 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary/Middle Level Education. My wife, Mary, and I moved to Marshfield in 2005 after my wife was hired as a Physician’s Assistant at Marshfield Clinic. I was hired as a 7th grade teacher at Colby Middle School from 2006 until 2013. In addition to teaching I was a middle school football coach, middle school boys’ basketball coach and head varsity baseball coach. In 2013 our oldest son, Mitchell, was born with a severe congenital heart defect that required heart surgery when he was six months old. I decided to become a stay at home dad as he could not be in day care for his first years of life. In addition to Mitchell (now age 7) , we have John (age 5) and Everett (10 months).

Where did you go to school?:
Certified Fire Fighter I and II training completed at Northcentral Technical College Merrill Public Service Campus. I have an Associate’s Degree for Paramedic Technician from Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids.

What inspired you to become a firefighter/paramedic?:
I first became interested in first responders after the events of 9/11/2001. I was inspired by the men and women that went towards danger to help those in need on that day. I was a junior at UW-La Crosse and entering my student teaching experiences when 9/11 occurred. My interest in the medical field continued to grow during my son’s numerous medical procedures. The doctors and nurses that worked to save our son did an excellent job explaining what was occurring and I envisioned myself working in the medical field in some capacity. Paramedic was a perfect fit as wanted to be able to practice medicine and help those who were desperate need, much like the first responders on 9/11.

What brought you to Marshfield Fire & Rescue Department?:
I did ride-time at Marshfield Fire during my training to become an EMT-Basic. I loved every aspect of the department, particularly the team atmosphere of the fire service. From that first day of ride-time I knew that my goal was to become a fire fighter / paramedic for Marshfield Fire and Rescue so that I could serve the community that my wife and I have called home for nearly 15 years.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?:
I’m looking forward to being the beacon of hope for a person on the worst day of their life. Our son was delivered back to us due to the expertise of skilled doctors and nurses that were part of his survival. I want to be part of the chain of survival that delivers a loved one back to his/her family.

Any hobbies/interests/stuff you’d want local readers to know about you?:
I enjoy all Wisconsin sports (Badgers, Brewers, Bucks, Packers). I enjoy running and have completed six full marathons. I qualified for and participated in the 2017 Boston Marathon. I mostly just enjoy spending time with my family.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?:
I am extremely excited and grateful to begin the next chapter of my life serving my home community of Marshfield!
