Key newcomers:

We have 9 freshmen this year, but all with at least some prior swim experience.  Keep an eye out for triplets Addison, Claire and Brenna Jirovec who are really stepping up for high school swim.  Amber’s younger sister Emily Winter is coming off a summer surgery but getting back into competition shape quickly. Sylvia Hanson has been showing significant promise early this season.

Conference outlook

The Valley as always has some tough competition with much larger schools, many outnumbering us 2 or even 3 to 1.  Our small but mighty Merrill team of only 14 swimmers gets challenged to swim 4 events sometimes back to back in every meet to cover the lineup.  We have a very dedicated group this year and are not going to give up any points without a fight to the finish.  I expect there will be several meets where it comes down to the final relay.

Keys to your success this season:

This team is young but very focused and improving by the day.  They have a great team dynamic and push each other to be their best every day.

Behind the scenes: Who are some of the people that help your program succeed?

We are very lucky to have a very dedicated strength and conditioning coach Ryan Heath at Merrill High School.  Coach Heath has been working with most of the team all summer and we have never started a season in this great of shape.  I am really able to focus on technique instead of getting the group conditioned which is a huge benefit.

We also have great support from our parents who step up to run computers and set up the pool deck to host meets.

Coach’s comments: anything else you’d like to share?

The Merrill community has been a great supporter of swim in Merrill and we have a great facility to practice and host meets.  I am really looking forward to what this young team is going to be able to accomplish not only this season but in the next 4 years as they mature.
