Middleton Wins Div. 1 Boys Swimming & Diving Title; Six Records Fall
WAUKESHA, Wis. – Middleton won the Division 1 team championship, and six event records were set at the 2023 State Boys Swimming & Diving Championships Waukesha South High School Natatorium Saturday.

The Cardinals won their second State title by compiling 288 points. Arrowhead was second for the second straight season with 211 points, and Madison Memorial was third with 180 points.
Senior Jack Madoch of Middleton won four events to help propel the Cardinals to the title. He shattered the Division 1 State Meet record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.61 after finishing runner-up in the event last season. Madoch added the crown in the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.74, which ranks second-fastest in State Meet history. He was runner-up in the event a year ago.
Madoch teamed with senior Nick Chirafisi, and freshmen Caden Van Buren and Max Carter to defend the crown the Cardinals won in the 200 freestyle relay last season. They posted a winning time of 1:22.74, which is the second-fastest ever recorded in the State Meet.
Madoch struck gold again with Chirafisi, senior Theo Wolf and freshman Sam Wolf, racing to the championship in the 400 freestyle relay with a State Meet record time of 3:01.71. It’s the second consecutive season the Cardinals have won the event.
Chirafisi added a third title to his collection by winning the crown in 200 freestyle. After placing third in the event last season, he regained the stroke that won him the title in 2021, reclaiming the gold medal with a time of 1:37.11. The four-time qualifier in the event also finished sixth in 2020.
The Cardinals swept the relay championships by adding the title in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Theo Wolf, Sam Wolf, Van Buren and Carter out-paced the rest of the competitors with a winning time of 1:31.05.
Senior Stuart Seymour of Brookfield Central/East was a two-time champion in the meet. He won his second consecutive title in the 100 backstroke with a State Meet record time of 47.77. Stuart competed in the event all four seasons of participation, also placing 7th in the event in 2021 and 18th in 2020. After placing runner-up last season, he added a championship in the 100 butterfly this season in a time of 47.62.
Other record-setting performances were turned in by junior Andrew Hanson of Hudson and junior Abram Mueller of Madison West. Hanson swam to the title in the 500 freestyle with a record of 4:24.74 after placing fourth a year ago to with a second-place finish in 2021. Mueller improved on last season’s runner-up finish to win the 100 breaststroke in a meet-record time of 53.20.
Senior Lance Johnson of Arrowhead won the 200 individual medley for the second year in a row by finishing in a time of 1:47.93. He completes his career as a four-time qualifier in the event. Johnson has a third-place finish in 2021 and an 11th-place finish in 2020 to go with his two championships.
Senior David Krol of Homestead was the champion in the diving competition, compiling a score of 518.45. He finished sixth in each of the past two seasons.
