Dishwasher Donated to Shirley’s House of Hope
Since Shirley’s House of Hope first opened in 2010, the domestic violence shelter’s donated dishwasher has worked hard- many times being used to wash dishes for the equivalent of seven families per day. Recently, that dishwasher died, but thanks to the generosity of a local business, the shelter’s dishes are cleaner than ever.
“Recently the dishwasher water pump stopped working and the women at the shelter were hand washing dishes, which is not a problem,” said Julie Cravillion, Executive Director. “Lately we have had women and children in the shelter who have been ill. With so many families living together it really is ideal to have a dishwasher that sanitizes the dishes.”
Cravillion contacted Bill Mitten from Mitten’s Furniture and Appliance and made a request for a dishwasher. Within two business days it was donated and installed.
The mission of Shirley’s House of Hope is to rebuild, renew, and restore lives of women and children hurting from domestic violence. The House provides emergency shelter and a 6-month healing program for approximately 63 women and children, and is the only emergency shelter in the area.
“Police and the staff in the emergency room at the hospital depend on us to provide safe shelter for women and children in unsafe living situations,” said Cravillion. “The 6-month healing program is a unique service offered to women who have been in abusive situations for many years.”
Women in the program not only receive safe housing, but also classes on setting healthy boundaries, forgiveness, Bible studies, and finances, along with life and job readiness skills.
Additionally, the women in the program receive case management, counseling, and are connected with local support groups. In the past six years, more than 320 women and children have received services.
“Shirley’s House of Hope is non-profit that receives no government funding. We are supported totally by caring and generous people in the community,” said Cravillion. “We are thankful for businesses like Mitten’s Furniture and Appliance that donate and provide a beautiful home for women and children to rebuild, renew, and restore lives hurting from domestic violence.”
“We like being able to help non-profit organizations and SHOH in particular,” said C.W. Mitten, owner. “SHOH helps people get back onto their feet and have the opportunity for a second chance. It benefits the people that use their services as well as the community.”

Striking Out Domestic Violence is a bowling fundraiser that provides food, clothing and shelter for women and children at Shirley’s House of Hope.
The event is being held on Sunday, April 30, 2017, 12-3 pm at Rose Bowl Lanes in Marshfield.
Bowlers are asked to attend one of two meetings to start their fundraising efforts: Tuesday, Feb. 28th or Monday, March 13th, 6:30pm at Faith Fellowship.
All bowlers have a chance to win a 2-night stay for 6 at Wilderness Water Park. Many other prizes are given out to top fundraisers.
