Mosinee crushed Amherst in boys soccer by a score of 8-2.
Mosinee’s improving passing was on display at Amherst on a cool Tuesday evening. Combined with early goals in both halves, forged a complete team victory.
The game began with Mosinee immediately pressuring the Amherst goal. While a shot went harmlessly beyond the goal, the ensuing goal kick proved to be the antidote for a blank scoreboard. Amherst attempted to play for possession out of the goal on the kick, but Mosinee’s Cole Kowalski jumped the pass and put the shot in the net before Amherst could respond, just 3” into the game. Cole was keen to Amherst’s play out of goal, and he timed the pass out of goal at 11” and 19” to gain a hat trick, by trapping the goal kicks and taking it past the separated defenders. Amherst was not about to quit, and they featured some quality play of their own, especially in the final attacking third of the field. A cross came to Amherst’s Carlos Lopez in the penalty area, who had just enough time to send in his shot. Mosinee’s midfield of Garret Donohue, Jake Neumann and Colton Blank responded, and sent the ball into the attacking third of the field, and the next opportunity for a Mosinee score came to Carter Daul. The build-up in possession helped to form a gap in the Amherst defense. Carter found himself on a breakaway in a gap between the defenders and blew past the last man. While his first shot was saved, Carter kept his focus and finished off the rebound. The half ended with Jaeger Dhein taking a pass from Garret Donohue and deftly getting his shot past the keeper, just one minute before the half. Mosinee went into halftime up 5-1.
The game could have possibly been in the balance into the second half, but Jaeger Dhein took away any hope the Falcons had left by scoring unassisted just 2” into the second half. Mosinee’s strength in the midfield started to show, and the game was clearly in Mosinee’s hands at that time. The next goal came to Cole Kowalski, when he took a PK after getting tackled in the penalty area. To their credit, Amherst did not quit. The Amherst offense was some of the most talented Mosinee had seen yet this year. Carlos was the pinnacle of that attack, and he got the final Amherst goal at 56”. However, the time was getting short, and Mosinee gave up little in space to Amherst. Carter Daul finished the scoring on the night with a beautiful shot off of an assist from Shawn Sowdawski. The final score was Mosinee 8, Amherst 2.
Mosinee has a short time to wait for their next game: Thursday, September 29, in a Great Northern Conference game vs. Antigo.
