Mosinee’s defense clamped down on the Medford Raiders leading to a key Great Northern Conference win. Mosinee capitalized on chances, but it was the defense that stood out in the 3-0 victory.

Medford features fast, physical players that play long through balls to create opportunity. Mosinee switched to a diamond defense from their usual flat-back, to limit the opportunities.

Cole Kowalski consistently read and cleared the ball, Keaton Wieloch stood tall in goal on the shots he did face, and Ethan Tazelaar and Colton Blank shut down the wings. Perhaps the standout player on this evening was Josh Ivey. Josh snuffed out the Raider attack countless times and never seemed to run out of energy to his task.

Scoring started for Mosinee with Garret Donohue coming up from a defensive midfield position, assisted by Toren Holtz, at 17”. While Mosinee had more chances, as did Medford, the score at halftime was 1-0, Mosinee. The second half changed, in large part to the combination of Toren and Cole Holtz. Mosinee won a corner at 47”, and Cole took the kick. His long ball floated perfectly over the Medford keeper and defense. Toren was sandwiched between two defenders, but he timed his leap and headed in the crossing ball into upper corner of the goal.

Medford played solid defense, but on that particular play Mosinee was just better. From that point forward Mosinee’s attack seemed to grow stronger while Medford struggled to keep the Indians at bay. Mosinee got one more tally at 53” off of a penalty kick after Mosinee was fouled in the Medford penalty area. From that point forward Mosinee switched to a more possession-orientated style and kept the ball away from Medford. Mosinee finished the game with a 3-0 victory.

Statistic of Note:

For the game Mosinee won 10 corner kicks, compared to 2 corner kicks for Medford.
