NEILLSVILLE, WI (OnFocus) – Chief Jim Mankowski of the Neillsville Police Department recently completed the Police Executive Development (POLEX) Course at Penn State University’s Justice and Safety Institute in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. The 10-day comprehensive training program is designed to equip new and experienced police commanders with the advanced skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their leadership roles.
The POLEX course covered various critical topics to develop effective law enforcement leaders, including the challenges of assuming command, leadership models for critical incidents, team development, policy creation, and public relations. Participants also examined liability issues related to training and off-duty conduct and best practices in incident management through social media. Other focus areas included reviewing current case law, addressing recruitment and retention challenges, and exploring future budgeting concepts.
The course also featured group activities that encouraged collaboration between law enforcement agencies. These exercises allowed commanders to share insights, address common challenges, and promote esprit de corps within their respective agencies.
“I am proud to have completed the POLEX program, which has provided me with invaluable tools to lead the Neillsville Police Department effectively and prepare our team for the future,” said Chief Mankowski. “This training will help us continue to evolve as a modern law enforcement agency that is responsive to the needs of our community.”
Moving forward, Chief Mankowski plans to implement the knowledge gained from the POLEX course to make necessary adjustments within the Neillsville Police Department, ensuring it remains well-prepared to meet the current and future demands.
