  • With their buttery texture and endless customization options, sugar cookies topped the charts in 15 states, making them the most popular Christmas dessert in the US.
  • Red velvet cake took the second spot, coming out on top in 11 states, including California, New York, and Florida, solidifying its status as a holiday classic.
  • From pecan pie in the South to hot chocolate with marshmallows in colder states like Montana and Wyoming, regional preferences play a big role in shaping Christmas dessert traditions.
  • States like Hawaii (cinnamon rolls), Kansas (apple pie), and Oregon (chocolate pudding) show how diverse holiday dessert preferences can be across the country.
  • Gingerbread man cookies hold their own. These spiced, whimsical treats claimed the top spot in four states, proving they’re still a beloved holiday staple.

No holiday feast feels complete without a dessert that wraps up the celebrations on a sweet note. While every family has its cherished recipes and traditions, certain desserts have earned their place as holiday staples across the US.

The research team at 24/7 Games took a deep dive into Google search data, analyzing over 1,000 holiday dessert-related keywords to find out the most popular Christmas desserts in every state.

The study examined Google searches such as “red velvet cake recipe,” “how to make red velvet cake,” and “red velvet cake Christmas recipe,” along with similar searches for each dessert. The results reveal a delightful mix of time-honored traditions and regional favorites.

Topping the charts in 15 states, including Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and Rhode Island, Sugar Cookies emerged as the nation’s go-to Christmas dessert. Their popularity isn’t surprising; they’re a perfect blend of buttery simplicity and creative potential. Whether decorated with frosting, sprinkles, or edible glitter, sugar cookies are as fun to make as they are to eat.

In 11 states, including California, Michigan, and New York, Red Velvet Cake ranks in second place. Its vibrant red hue and creamy cream cheese frosting make it a perfect centerpiece for any holiday table. This dessert’s luxurious texture and rich flavor embody the indulgence of the season.

When it’s chilly outside, nothing warms the soul like a steaming mug of Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows. This comforting drink-dessert hybrid topped the charts in six states, including Arizona, Montana, and Wyoming. It’s the ultimate winter companion, bringing back nostalgic memories of snowy nights and holiday movie marathons.

Five states, including Kentucky, Missouri, and West Virginia, had Fudge as their top choice. Whether it’s made with classic chocolate, spiced with peppermint, or loaded with nuts, fudge is a versatile treat that feels like pure holiday magic in every bite.

Decked out with icing smiles and gumdrop buttons, Gingerbread Man Cookies were the winners in four states, including Georgia and Vermont. Their warm spices and whimsical shapes make them a holiday classic that’s both nostalgic and delicious.

In Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas, Pecan Pie took the top spot. With its flaky crust, gooey filling, and crunchy pecan topping, this dessert captures the essence of Southern holiday gatherings.

For a minty twist on holiday desserts, Candy Canes took the top spot in Nevada and Utah, while Peppermint Bark was the favorite in Maryland and New Hampshire. Both treats bring a refreshing zing to the season’s sugar-laden spread.

Some states had unique preferences that stood out. Cinnamon Rolls were the top pick in Hawaii, while Apple Pie claimed the spotlight in Kansas. Meanwhile, Chocolate Pudding sweetened up Christmas in Oregon.
