New Study Reveals The 22 Most Tongue-Twisting Cocktails Names
  • Caipirinha is the most challenging cocktail to pronounce, likely due to its Brazilian Portuguese origins
  • The classic Mojito is the second most difficult to pronounce, often causing tongue-twisting troubles
  • Despite its Tahitian roots, the Mai Tai is the least mispronounced cocktail on the list, with only 2K listens online

With new cocktails constantly being invented, some with rather unusual names, it’s no surprise they can be easily mispronounced.

Recognizing this, the research team at GB The Green Brand has looked into the most mispronounced cocktails and has revealed how to actually pronounce them.

Topping the list is the sweet and sour cocktail, Caipirinha, with a whopping 843K listens on Forvo, an online pronunciation dictionary website. The name itself comes from the Brazilian Portuguese word “caipira,” meaning someone from the countryside.

Trailing closely behind Caipirinha is the classic Mojito. Despite its popularity, the classic Mojito remains a pronunciation mystery for many, racking up 196K listens on the pronunciation platform.

The refreshingly citrusy Daiquiri takes the third spot, though its name might cause a bit of tongue trouble for some, as shown by its 72K listens. The name is a tribute to its birthplace, a small town on the southeastern tip of Cuba called Daiquiri.

Rounding out the top five are Paloma (33K listens) and Piña Colada (31K listens) at fourth and fifth place, respectively. These summery cocktails have people a little tongue-tied when ordering at the bar, with a combined 64K searches for pronunciation. Surprisingly, the Piña Colada, a seemingly worldwide classic, still trips up many drinkers.

Even a seemingly familiar drink like the Cosmopolitan can cause confusion. With 15.1K online listens for its pronunciation, and it seems the middle part might be the culprit. The correct pronunciation is “koz-moh-PAH-lih-tan,” with an emphasis on the long “ah” sound, not “koz-moh-PO-lih-tan.”

Negroni and Vieux Carré come in at seventh and eighth, respectively, with Negroni garnering 15K online listens for pronunciation and Vieux Carré trailing close behind at 13K. While Negroni might seem easier to pronounce, Vieux Carré, with its French origins, throws a curveball.

Rounding out the top ten are the surprisingly popular cocktails Bee’s Knees and Gin and Tonic.

The Bee’s Knees, despite its seemingly straightforward name, garnered a total of 12.1K online listens. This suggests that even familiar names can be tricky to pronounce or remember for some. Even more surprising is the inclusion of the Gin and Tonic, a classic and seemingly easy-to-order drink, also snagged 12K listens.

Methodology

The research team analyzed Forvo data to find out which cocktail names have gotten people seeking pronunciation guidance. To do this, researchers compiled a list of the most popular cocktails and analyzed the number of listens for each cocktail. The cocktails with the most listens ranked the highest in pronunciation difficulty while the ones with the least listens ranked the lowest.
