Newman Volleyball was at The Beast of the Northeast Tournament hosted by GB Notre Dame on Friday and Saturday with 32 teams attending.
Friday was pools of four teams each. We ended up 2nd in the pool with matches against Middleton (W25-16,25-23) Freedom (L18-25,24-26) GB Preble (W25-12,25-10) so we advanced to the top half of the tournament to the Championship Bracket.
Saturday morning we were matched up with powerhouse and eventual tournament winner BayPort coached by Jeremy Weis. We battled but their physicality was just more than we could overcome. (L16/25,13-25) Next up was host school GB Notre Dame with PrepDig contributor Chris Fitgerald at the head. It was quite a dog fight again against a very talented and well coached team. So fun to see this level of play and how our players pushed themselves to a new level of play. (L23-25,11-25)
We then were placed into the Gold Playoff bracket D based on our finish after the morning matches. This was a single elimination bracket for the remainder of the tournament. First up was GB Southwest. They had some talented players that really pushed us and challenged us along the way especially their setter and outside hitter but in the end we were able to pull out the match. (W25-17, 25-19) The championship match for our Gold Bracket D was against a very scrappy Altoona team. We battled back and forth, Newman taking the first set 25-17, Altoona taking the 2nd set 18-25 forcing the deciding 3rd set. This continued to be a back and forth contest but we finally gained some steam toward the end and were able to win 15-10.
This was a very well run tournament at a first class facility in Appleton. Community First Champion Center.
It gave our team a chance to get lots of valuable reps against some high level teams.
Leaders in kills were Lily Shields with 42 and Camille Sobolewski with 32
Ace leaders were Lily with 10 and Ashley Jankowski with 9
Dig leader was Lily and Set Assists was led my Paige Guld.
