Pines 2 Three Lakes 2

Report shared by Northland Pines Head Coach Rodney Sternhagen
Cross town battle and both teams came to play.  We started with the kick off and overloaded taking possession attacking the flag and getting the ball in the box and pressure early.  Just shy of 7 minutes in the game senior captain midfield Anthony Gaetano played a through ball to fellow senior captain Cody Vojta who made the 1 v 0 look easy tapping the ball in the back for a 1-0 lead.  4 minutes later senior Vojta switch the field finding the feet of Sam Schrock in the box and he took a touch until the keeper made a move and put it in the back of the net. Pines up 2-0. This was much the same the rest of the half but failed to convert on multiple opportunities and ended the half playing very predictable soccer.  That two goal lead is the worst in sports.
We got them ready to put the game away and we came out stealing the kick off and went down putting a a great scoring opportunity but the goal denied it with a great save.  I think this frustrated our team and we got away from what was working and started taking to many touches and when you do that I’m the defensive and middle third of the field bad things happen and that is exactly how Three Lakes got on the board taking advantage of an errant pass giving a break away pass to goal.  Three Lakes is a hard working team and bottom line when we stopped moving the ball they started winning all the 50/50 balls and midway in the second half another play where we took touches and the forward picked the pocket and turned on net and no chance for the goalie.
Hats off to Three Lakes for not giving up and playing  their hearts out.  When we play simple one to two touch soccer it’s fun to watch and hard to beat but when we get away from that and try to do it all ourselves you get a second half like we had.  Three Lakes is a great team and you can’t afford to get away from your plan or they will pounce on the opportunity given.
