Northland Pines Soccer Kicks Past Antigo

The game started as we planned one to two touches and playing the ball wide and getting their back four to run around and chase.  We struggled to understand that when we draw the defender out of the middle we need to communicate and get rid of the ball and find players in the middle.  Antigo has a strong and very fast defender that cleaned up a great deal of attacks.  The ball however moves faster than any player.  Our success would come down to ball movement.  It took 16 minutes to open up the goal-scoring when Ava Gaetano passed the ball over across the attacking defender and Zoe Anderson found the back of the net.  One minute later Zoe Anderson repaid the favor and slid the ball over to Ava for a score.  The duo would not be finished when in the 25-minute when Ava Gaetano once again hooked up with Zoe Anderson for a 3-0 lead. Zoe was not finished when she tapped the ball behind the Antigo defender out racing the defender and finishing the run with her hatrick.  The half would not be complete without Ava adding to her number by taking a nicely slide-over ball from Senior Mallory Schmidt.  First half Pines 5 Antigo 0.  The last part of the half consisted of giving younger players much-needed time and forcing the experienced girls to lead and step up their game.

At half I wanted them to try things and continue to improve in the simple things.  They were all challenged to continue to work on their first touch.  I challenged the midfielders to let the ball do the work and use this to play the ball out of the middle switching to the other side of the field.  I asked the girls in the back to make passes in front of the goal so they were not forced to have their backs on the play.  I also asked the forwards to set the ball back instead of turning into t 1 versus 4 and then make their run.  I enjoy it when they come out and try stuff. As a result, it took some time to gain consistent and fluid play.  In the 53rd minutes Grace Plank played a nice pass to Mallory Schmidt who drilled the ball in the back of the net.  4 minutes later Mallory raced away with the ball getting her second goal.  We wrapped up the scoring by putting in the final goal when
freshman Addie Paez played a ball to Kaydence Brost to tally the 8th goal.  One minute later, the game was called.
