Barbara Jo Backaus, age 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Monday, July 11, 2022.

Barbara was born on November 24, 1940, to her parents Joseph “Buster” Newman and Marcella Newman (Boehning) at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, WI. She graduated from Marshfield High School in 1958, and married Stanley Backaus at Immanuel Lutheran Church on September 2, 1961. They had three sons together, Dale (Terri) Backaus, Daniel (Patricia) Backaus, and Derrick (Theresa) Backaus.

In her free time, Barbara loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was very active in her church life, serving on Alter Circle, in handbells, writing the Rejoice Newsletter, and making church banners and baptismal napkins. When her children were in school, she was very active in PTL and organizing the candy bar sales. She was a master seamstress and took pride in making her children’s clothes when they were little. Barbara also made countless dresses for her granddaughters, including christening gowns, and even sewed her daughter-in-law, Theresa Backaus’ wedding dress.

Barbara also loved camping with her family and “fishing”- or rather, suntanning- with Stanley. When she was home, she was always found working in her flowerbeds and gardening. Her crafting kept her busy too. Barbara had many crafting talents like knitting, cross-stitching, painting ceramics, crocheting, and making countless scrubbies. She was very fond of traveling, with Las Vegas and Florida being her favorite places. She loved decorating her home for every holiday, eating ice cream and popcorn with her grandchildren, and bowling. Barbara dearly loved the Lord and found comfort in angels. She collected angel figurines, and always was wearing an angel pin. She worked as a secretary for Stainless and Repair, Inc., until her retirement in May of 2007. Then, she was an Officer at the Senior Craft Shoppe where she dedicated countless hours.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Marcella Newman, her brother, Richard Newman, her sister-in-law, Connie Newman, her sister, Judy Fink, her brother-in-law, Orville Syring, and her daughter-in-law, Patricia Backaus.

She is survived by her husband, Stanley, and her two siblings, Ron (Michelle) Newman of Verona, and Peggy Syring of Marshfield. She is also survived by her three children: Dale (Terri) Backaus, Daniel Backaus, and Derrick (Theresa) Backaus. Along with her six grandchildren: Stacey (James) Rollins, Nicholas Backaus, Keshia (Cody) Herrington, Lauren (Michael) Fagan, Kimberly Backaus, Olivia Backaus, and four great-grandchildren: Isaac and Chloe Rollins, Eliah Fagan and Brooklynn Herrington.

The memorial service will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Marshfield. The service will be livestreamed at www.faceboook.com/rembsfuneralhomes. Visitation begins at 9:00 am at the Church, with the service at 12:00 pm, and a meal to follow. Burial will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Marshfield.
