Obituary for Betty Heiring

Elizabeth L. “Betty” Heiring, age 98, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at North Shore Healthcare, Marshfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Marshfield, where a visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time. Rev. Daniel Thelen will officiate. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield, Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Elizabeth Louise was born on December 10, 1926, in Holy Cross, Iowa, to Henry J. and Elizabeth (Clemen) Ungs. She attended Holy Cross School and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy (an all-girls school) in Dubuque, Iowa. Elizabeth attended Dubuque School of Cosmetology.

She was united in marriage to Gerald L. “Tink” Heiring on September 7, 1953, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, in Holy Cross, Iowa. He died on February 17, 2011.

After their marriage, the Heirings moved to Guttenberg, Iowa where they had the opportunity to purchase the Western Auto Store. Betty and Tink owned and operated Western Auto through the summer of 1972. They relocated to Marshfield, Wisconsin where Tink worked as the Regional Manager of Barrett Mobile Home Transport and Betty worked as head cashier in customer service for Shopko Industries in Marshfield until her retirement in 1993. She then worked alongside Tink in the mobile home transport business. They enjoyed traveling around the United States for work and for fun “road trips” until his death in 2011. Betty loved gardening and entered her dahlias and sweet pickles in the Central Wisconsin Fair, often winning blue ribbons, as well as giving them to her family and friends.

She is survived by her four children, Gerri River of Wausau, Michael Heiring of Wausau, Jane Heiring of Stevens Point, and Robert (April) Heiring of Winona, MN; three grandchildren, Gerin (Julie) River of Pleasant Hill, California, Carver and Claire Heiring; two great granddaughters, Satya and Samara River; and three sisters-in-law, Darlene (Leo) Rusch, Joyce (Mike) Salatino, and Jean (Donald) Heiring.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sisters, Mary Kay and Dorothy Mae, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Cy Lampe, Donald Necker, Donald Heiring, Leo Rusch, Mike Salatino, Zedelle (Gib) Tegeler, Lucille (Walter) Heying, Helen (Ted) Bakula, Mae (Bill) McGuire, Lois (Duane) Ross, Elaine (David) Williams, and Shirley (Gene) Klein.
