Charles Edmund Brasington, also known as Ned, passed away in Anchorage, Alaska, at 40 years old on November 15, 2023.

An accomplished lawyer, Ned served the Alaskan government as Assistant Attorney General. Previous to this role, Ned supervised the Solicitor’s Division of the Office of the Attorney General in the Northern Marianas Islands.

Born in Iowa City, IA, on May 4, 1983, Ned graduated from Grinnell College in 2005 where he double majored in Political Science and German. During his time at Grinnell, Ned took his German skills to Berlin where he studied for a semester at Humboldt-Universität. After graduation, Ned attended the University of Tartu where he studied International Law with an interest in the Baltic states. His interest in Political Science and his family’s legacy in law led him to the University of Iowa College of Law. He graduated with his J.D. in 2011.

During his time at the University of Iowa, he worked on the law journal as editor. While still a law student, he interned with the Alaska Public Defender Agency in Nome and the Honorable John A. Jarvey at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.

Ned’s personal interests were broad and eclectic. He was a voracious reader of a variety of topics from history and political science to Marvel comics and Japanese manga, such as his favorite, Berserk. He had a natural gift for languages, becoming fluent in German, and near-fluent in Russian and Estonian. He was an extremely experienced scuba diver with over 500 dives in his career. He was a certified diving instructor who dove all over the world with his friends and family, from the lakes of the Midwest to the oceans of Fiji. He loved playing Dungeons & Dragons with his friends and family. It allowed him to flex his creativity as a storyteller as Dungeon Master and build community with those who were close to him.

He loved video games from the moment he played the original Nintendo Entertainment System as a child. He kept that passion throughout his life, eventually sharing it with his own children on the Nintendo Switch. He was a lover of animals, especially cats. When living in Saipan, he rescued several cats and dogs from the streets. And when he ran out of room in his house, he started finding homes for them both at home and back in the mainland.

Ned is survived by his mother Rebecca Margaret Bartow (Tom); his children Blake Brasington (Wukong) and Arthur Brasington (Wongzi), his siblings and step-siblings William Bashert (Meredith), Elizabeth Dueweke (Sam), James Bartow, Joseph Bartow, and Melissa Haralson; uncles and aunts Eliza Willis (Janet Seiz), David Willis (Mika Obayashi), Mary Huebsch (Mark), Evan Brasington, Ben Brasington, and Becky Brasington Clark (John Cronin), 7 nephews and nieces, step-mother Kathleen Ferrell, and friend and roommate Ben Hanes. He was preceded in death by his father Dr. Richard Brasington, brother, James Brasington, and uncle, Philip Brasington. He is also survived by his beloved cats Meowtse, Pyewacket, and Marie Laveau.
