Dr. John L. Smith, 98, Marshfield, formerly Pittsville, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at Marshfield Medical Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, November 6, 2023 with visitation from 9:30 am until service time. Father Nathan will officiate. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery where military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 153 – Pittsville. Buchanan/Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
John was born on April 7, 1925 in Rosholt to Arthur and Ruth (Laughlin) Smith. His family moved to Pittsville in 1926 where his father purchased the Dietz Drug Store.
John attended St. Joachim grade school and then Pittsville High School graduating in 1943. He joined the United States Army immediately after graduation, serving in the field artillery in the European Theatre of Operations where he earned two battle stars. Upon his discharge in 1946 he attended the University of Wisconsin for 2 ½ years.
He married Corinne Ferk in September 1949 and they had 5 children.
He entered Marquette Dental School in fall of 1949 and graduated as a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1953. He practiced dentistry in Tomahawk for 1 ½ years and then in Greenwood for 12 years. He then moved to Marshfield in the fall of 1967 where he practiced dentistry until his retirement in summer of 1989.
John was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent many hours with family and friends at “The Farm” near Pittsville and the JL Hunting Club in Buffalo County. He was also the best friend of every dog he ever met!
He is survived by 2 sons, John Jr. (Wenting) Smith and Michael (Kristin) Smith, 3 granddaughters, Jennifer, Kelly and Corrine Smith, 1 great granddaughter, Sienna Schneider, brother Arthur Smith and dear friend Betty Miller. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Mark and Matthew Smith, daughter, Maria Smith Schneider, and grandson, Kenneth Schneider III.
