Obituary for George Winkler

George Howard Winkler passed away on February 28, 2020 at the age of 87.

Born on December 24, 1932 at St Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, WI to Anthony Martin (Buck) and Marion (nee Peterson) Winkler, George attended St John’s grade school and Marshfield High School graduating in the class of 1950. In 1949, George joined the Wisconsin National Guard and served proudly for 25 years, being called up to active duty Oct 1961 – August 1962 in response to the Berlin Crisis.

After high school graduation, George worked at Marshfield Airways and then Weinbrenner Shoes in Marshfield before briefly working for Evinrude Motors in Milwaukee in early 1953. That spring, he returned to Marshfield and began a 36-year career at the Marshfield Post Office, retiring from the Postal Service in 1989. George also served as a Director at Central City Credit Union from 1976-2001.

In September of 1955, George met LaMalle Anna Diers at the Central Wisconsin State Fair in Marshfield. They were married on May 30, 1956 and began their 63+ year married life together.

After retirement, George involved himself with antiques and collectibles, and was active in the North Wood County Historical Society of Wisconsin, pursuing local and area railroad history. He authored a chapter on the history of railroads in Marshfield, Wisconsin for the city’s 125th Anniversary commemoration book.

George is survived by his wife, LaMalle, and three children; daughter Caryl (Jim) Blenker of Marshfield, and sons Michael Winkler of Chicago, IL and Mark (Sheila Brody) Winkler of Denver, CO, as well as many grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, stepmother Irene, younger sister Grace, and oldest daughter Marion (Greg) Herkert.
