Geraldine A. Altmann, age 89, Marshfield, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at her home in the Town of Lincoln.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Marshfield, where the visitation will be from 9:00 am until service time. Rev. Daniel Thelen will officiate. The service will be streamed online at www.facebook.com/rembsfuneralhomes. A combined Parish Council of Catholic Women and Knights of Columbus rosary service will be held at 8:45 am on Tuesday at the church. Entombment will be in McMillan Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Town of McMillan, Marathon County. Granddaughters will serve as honorary pallbearers and grandsons as pallbearers.
Geraldine was born on September 12, 1934, in Fond du Lac, to Raymond L. and Lorraine (Klein) Walgenbach. She was a 1952 graduate of Stratford High School. She was united in marriage to James C. Altmann on May 11, 1957, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Stratford and they just celebrated their 67th anniversary.
Gerrie had been employed at Schreiner Plumbing, Adler Theaters, Felker Brothers, Marshfield Clinic, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Riveredge Country Club. In 1976 she and Jim began Altmann Builders Supply and in 1985 Gerrie opened ABC Child Care Center, where she cared for thousands of children, who referred to her as “Grandma Altmann”, retiring at the age of 81.
Gerrie loved to cook, loved Christmas, even showcasing her home for the Altrusa Christmas open house, dinner theater bus trips, spending time at their cabin in Phillips, building fires, fishing in Canada, and most of all, hosting family gatherings for over 40 people.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Jim and their children, John (Jan) Altmann, Tom (Kelly) Altmann, Kathleen (Richard) Altmann-Drinka, James Altmann, Jr. (Linda Heath), and Krisann (Josh) Mauritz, and a son-in-law, Jim Luedtke, all of Marshfield. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, Jason (Tanalee) Luedtke, Christopher (Becky) Altmann, Kristen (Patrick) Niehaus, Jennifer (Jake) Parker, Daniel Altmann, Robert (Maci) Altmann, Jonathon (Kayla) Schultz, Amanda Malyuk, Kimberly (Adam) Schmidt, Katherine Altmann, Michael (Anne) Altmann, Kristina (Travis) Kersten, Jordan Altmann-Drinka, Jared Altmann-Drinka, Sydney Mauritz, Isaac Mauritz and Rylee Mauritz, and 25 great grandchildren, Jaylee and Jazlyn Luedtke, Mackenna, Olivia and Isabella Altmann, Joseph and Madeline Niehaus, Alexander, Henry and Leo Parker, Hoyerr, Harkerr, Hadlerr and Hayzerr Altmann, Charles, Franklin, and Evelyn Schultz, Eli, Lilly and Halle Malyuk, August and Kora Schmidt, Gemma Altmann, Luka Lee, Ava Altmann and baby Kersten (due in September). She is further survived by her brothers and sisters, Janet Weber of Marshfield, Patricia Szmanda of Florida, Karen (Ken) Seehafer, Raymond (Ann) Walgenbach, Jr., all of Marshfield, and a sister-in-law, Linda Walgenbach of North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond, Sr. and Lorraine Walgenbach, a daughter, Karlene Luedtke, grandsons, Staff Sergeant Joseph Altmann and Timothy Altmann, a great grandson, Boyd Altmann, siblings, Daniel Walgenbach, Susie Rudoll, James Walgenbach, and Sandra Kay Walgenbach.
