Joan F. Berndt went home to the Lord and her husband on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at the age of 91 at North Crest Assisted Living in Stevens Point. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 8, 2024 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Junction City where visitation for family and friends will be from 9:30 am until service time. Rev. Dr. Timothy Roser will officiate. Burial will follow at Runkel Cemetery in the Town of Eau Pleine, Portage County. Martens/Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Joan was born to Earl and Bergetta (Furo) Altenburg on June 22, 1932 in Stevens Point, WI and attended White Lily school in the Town of Eau Plaine, she later attended schools in Stevens Point, graduating from, P.J. Jacobs High School in 1950. After high school, she worked for an insurance agency in Stevens Point until her marriage.
Joan met the love of her life Robert Berndt at a wedding dance, and they soon married on April 18, 1953. Joan and Bob resided in Junction City where they raised their two daughters. They were married 69 years before Bob’s passing on June 1, 2022.
Joan and Bob loved to travel in their camper across the United States. She loved spending time with her family. She was a faithful servant of the Lord, attending St. Paul’s for decades with her husband.
Joan is survived by her two daughters, Carrie (Jim) Tryba of Freedom and Debbie (Leonard) Wayerski of Junction City, as well as 6 grandchildren; Michael (Dawn) Wayerski of Junction City, Amy (Jason) Genskow of Junction City, Melissa (Garret) Marshall of Lombard, IL, Michelle (Sam Wright) Slattery of Long Beach, CA, Melinda (Kevin) Draeger of Normal, IL, and Christopher (Mackenzie) Slattery of Eau Claire, and 10 great grandchildren, Skylar, Kyla Hope and Phillip Genskow, Megan, Madelyn and Miley Wayerski, Corey Marshall, Lily Rae and Addison Rose Draeger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and in-laws Otto and Elizabeth Berndt, her sister-in-law’s Margaret Glenetske, Elinor Berndt and brother-in-laws Lawrence (Elinor) and Earl Berndt, Harry Glenetske and Wilbur Epright.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to all of her caregivers at North Crest Assisted Living, especially Sydney, Kristie, Mary, and the caring staff of Hearthland Hospice who helped care for our mother in her final days.
