Obituary for John Kirchner

John P. “Jack” Kirchner, 83, Marshfield, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024 at Stoney River Memory Care.

Jack was born on October 24, 1940, in Keokuk, Iowa to Edwin and Gertrude (Breheny) Kirchner. He graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School in 1959. Following high school Jack joined the Navy in 1960, where his aptitude for learning did not go unnoticed: while he was a sailor, he went on to graduate from the University of Iowa in 1963 with a BA in General Science. He then studied at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago, earning his MD in 1967. Jack then earned his PhD from Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He married the former Miss Carole Anne Evans July 11, 1964 in Keokuk, Iowa.

From 1967 to 1977 Jack was a Navy Physician specializing in Hepatology, going on to earn the rank of Lt. Commander before his honorable discharge. He then led a career in medicine at the Marshfield Clinic for 33 years, retiring in 2010. A lifelong student, he enjoyed reading, studying, and teaching the many medical students and residents that he met over the years.

He is survived by his wife Carole, daughter Nicole (Ken) Elliott of Eugene, Oregon, and son Patrick (Susan) Kirchner of Sheboygan, WI. He is further survived by 5 grandchildren: Kendra Litalien, Alexis Keller, and Megan Elliott of Eugene, OR, and Katja and Pascal Kirchner of Sheboygan, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Jim, Paul, and Ron Kirchner.

He will be interred in the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa.
