Obituary for Mary Leick

Mary D. Leick, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Stoney River Assisted Living, Marshfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Catholic church, Stratford, with Rev.  Sengole Vethanayagam officiating. The service will be streamed online at www.facebook.com/rembsfuneralhomes. Burial will be St. Joesph’ Cemetery, Town of Eau Pleine, Marathon County. The visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Sauter/Rembs Funeral Home, Stratford, and from 10:00 am until service time on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Mary was born on May 19, 1944, in Marshfield, to Jacob and Agnes (Drexler) Altmann and was a graduate of Stratford High School. She then received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education from UW Stevens Point. After her education, Mary was a student teacher at Lincoln Elementary in Marshfield and then taught full-time at St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Stratford. After she started to have children, she taught part-time at St. Joseph’s, teaching art and physical education. Once her children were grown, she worked for American Greetings as a Merchandiser.

Mary was an avid gardener and was known throughout the area for her beautiful flower gardens. She and her husband, Ken also enjoyed making the compost that nourished the plants. Her gardens were included in the North Central Wisconsin Master Gardeners Garden Walk.

She loved to cook and was always on the hunt for the best bread recipe and loved to can the produce from her vegetable gardens as well.

She loved to do cross-stitch and embroidery, creating hundreds of pieces of art.

Mary was loved by all and known to always have a warm smile that lit up the room. She adored her children and grandchildren.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth P. Leick on July 6, 1968, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Stratford. He died on February 27, 2023.

She is survived by her children, Janice Leick (Greg Melchoir) of Tomahawk, Bonnie (Douglas O’Leary) Leick of Sister Bay, Dan Leick (Stephanie Reis) of Stratford, Tom Leick of Marshfield, Lisa Leick of Grafton and David Leick of Stratford. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jacob Leick, Joshua Leick, Ryan O’Leary, and Connor O’Leary. She is further survived by sisters, Agnes Koehler, Rosie Bean, and Kathy Richardson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Casper Altmann and William “Billy” Altmann, and a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Ackerman.

If desired, memorials may be designated in Mary’s name to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation or the Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation.

The family wishes to thank Mandy, Tracy, Sarah, and the staff of Stoney River Assisted Living and Taiya, and the staff at Promedica Hospice for the loving and dedicated care that was given to Mary.
