Mary was born on December 7, 1946 in Marquette, Michigan, to Russell and Louise (Crawford) McCombie. She graduated from Kohler High School in 1965 and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from St. Norbert’s College.
After college she volunteered for the Peace Corps and spent two years helping the people of Afghanistan. This was the start of her lifelong mission to help people.
Mary then worked at Loyola Hospital in Chicago, Illinois as a medical technician until 2008. This is where Mary met and worked with her lifelong best friend, Sandy Blenker. Together they shared a passion for collecting numerous unique items. Mary was a voracious knitter and provided a continuous flow of afghans to the Ronald McDonald House near the hospital. She also enjoyed various other crafts, including crocheting, needlepoint, and scrapbooking.
Mary moved to Marshfield with Sandy after retiring in 2008. Her love for crafting extended into her new community as she joined the volunteer group Crafters for a Cause. This dedicated group created afghans, slippers, prayer shawls, and other handmade items for those in need.
She is survived by her brothers, Michael (Paula) McCombie of South Barrington, IL, Patrick McCombie of Wilmington, DE, and William (Marguerite) McCombie of Lakewood, CO, and her nephews, Grant (Ronna), Hunter (Kathy), Fletcher (Karina), Ian, Adam (Meghan), and Nicholas (Kristina), and her niece, Cindy (Jason) McLain, and 10 grand nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her best friend, Sandy Blenker, and her sister-in-law, Cinda McCombie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Crafters for a Cause, c/o Jane Chapel, 720 N. Peach Ave., Marshfield, WI 54449.
