Marcella “Sally” J. Weis, 93, Marshfield, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at her home in Marshfield surrounded by her family.
Sally was born March 18, 1932, in Stratford, Wisconsin to Antone and Johanna Gerl (Cisco). From Sally’s memoirs: “I was born in the afternoon. We had a blizzard going on. Doc Murphy was called to my grandparents’ house, but his car went off the road into the ditch. My grandma, Mariana Cisco, got a word to my dad. He hooked up the horses to a stone-boat and pulled Doc Murphy out. Meanwhile, I couldn’t wait to be born, and my mom and grandmother were panicking. Mom was an only child, and they didn’t have much to do with babies. Doc Murphy arrived just after I did. They cut the cord, wrapped me up in a towel, put me in a shoebox and laid me in the oven of the cookstove. So, if I’ve seemed a bit half-baked in my lifetime, that’s my excuse.”
Sally attended the Drake Country School in the town of Eau Pleine. Following Drake, she attended Stratford schools through 10th grade. Much later in life, she completed her GED with Midstate Technical College. Sally was a hard worker her entire life. Some of the numerous occupations were at Weinbrenner’s Shoe Factory, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Figi’s, as well as running her own bakery business. She was known throughout the area for baking the delectable breads for local supper clubs, including Casa Loma, Charlais, Liethens, and various restaurants. She also sang at WDLB radio. Her elder children would deliver the bread in a red coaster wagon. Sally worked at The Marshfield Eagles’ Club, starting out as a janitor and moving on to become head chef for 25 years. She fed the masses.
Sally is survived by her six sons and two daughters: Susan Wolf of Lindsey, Ronald Weis of Stockton, CA, Richard (Linda) Weis of Marshfield, Judy Weis of Madison, Joseph (Sherri) Weis of Auburndale, Daniel (Beth) Weis of Arpin, Jeffrey (Becky) Weis of Marshfield, John (Shelly) Weis of Woodruff, and Thomas (Elizabeth) Weis of Delafield.
Sally’s beloved grandchildren include (in the order of their parents above): Carmen Walters of Arlington, Jeremiah Wolf of Ladysmith, Cassandra Wolf (Arik Alva) of Hawkins, Jennifer Weis (Stephen Curry) of Stockton, Nicole Weis (Brandon Omernick) of Seattle, WA, Mathew Weis of Milwaukee, Dustin Weis (Sam T) of Stevens Point, Terri Rae (Ross) Butler of Lodi, Emily Weis of Slinger, Anna Weis of Minneapolis, MN, Ashly Weis of Woodruff, Taylor Weis of Pewaukee, and Elijah Weis of Delafield; and 3 great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Amelia, and Levi; stepchildren, Michael Becker and Marissa Becker; step great grandchildren, Lucas, Hazel, and Harper, and many nieces and nephews.
Sally will be greatly missed, yet her family will strive to carry on her legacy and her tenacious and persistent character in their lives.
Sally was preceded in death by her son, Robert, her parents, Antone and Johanna, her brothers, Thomas, Jim, and Frank and her dog, Pepper. She was also preceded in death by her devoted friend and companion, Leon Capen.
Her faith in God was really important as she understood she was a child of God.
Special thank you to Gloria Wolf, who delivered communion every Sunday, favorite nephew, Eddie Gerl, Compassus Hospice, Home Healthcare and especially Nurse Shannon. Also, Sally’s important request was to finish her life at home, which was accomplished by her daughter Susan “Susa”.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be set up at a later date.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 14, 2025 at Rembs Funeral Home, Marshfield with a PCCW rosary at 9:30 am followed by visitation until the time of service. Rev. Barry Saylor will officiate. Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Town of Weston, Clark County at a later date.
