Robert “Bob” Berndt went home to the Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at the age of 90 at North Haven Memory Care where he resided for the past 5 years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Junction City where visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time. Rev. Dr. Timothy Roser will officiate. Burial will follow at Runkel Cemetery in the Town of Eau Pleine, Portage County. Martens/Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Bob was born to Elizabeth and Otto Berndt on February 17, 1932 in Stevens Point and grew up on the family farm in Junction City near Dancy. He attended Mosinee High School and graduated in 1949. Bob met the love of his life, Joan Altenburg, at a wedding dance. They married on April 18, 1953. Bob and Joan resided in Junction City where they raised their 2 daughters. Bob was a dedicated employee for the Koch Terminal (Great Northern Oil Company) where he worked for 30 ½ years and took great pride in his work. As a mechanic, Bob loved to tinker with everything, especially cars. If it could possibly be fixed or repaired, he could do it.
Bob loved his family and his dogs dearly. He also loved to snowmobile and travel with the camper all around the United States. He especially enjoyed sharing these experiences with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a friendly man who was always meeting new people, listening to, and more often telling stories. He was an active member of the community as demonstrated through his years of dedication to the Junction City Lions Club, the Junction City Volunteer Fire Department, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Junction City, and Portage County Housing Board. He will most recently be remembered for his work on the original Junction City Fire Department truck to get it up and running again so it can be enjoyed by others for many years to come.
As a committed husband, lover of the Lord, family man and dedicated community and church member, Bob will be remembered by many.
Bob is survived by his wife, Joan, two daughters, Carrie (Jim) Tryba of Freedom and Debbie (Leonard) Wayerski of Junction City, as well as 6 grandchildren; Michael (Dawn) Wayerski of Junction City, Amy (Jason) Genskow of Junction City, Melissa (Garret) Marshall of Lombard, IL, Michelle (Sam Wright) Slattery of Long Beach, CA, Melinda (Kevin) Draeger of Normal, IL, and Christopher (Mackenzie) Slattery of Eau Claire, and 10 great grandchildren, Skylar, Kyla Hope and Phillip Genskow, Megan, Madelyn and Miley Wayerski, Corey Marshall, Lily Rae and Addison Rose Draeger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Margaret (Harry) Glenetske, and brothers, Lawrence (Elinor) Berndt and Earl Berndt, and brother-in-law, Wilbur Epright.
The family would like to express our thanks for the care from North Haven Memory care staff and the help given to Bob in his last few weeks from Heartland Hospice Care, especially Lisa and Chris.
