MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – An off-duty Marshfield Police Department lieutenant assisted in the arrest of a suspect involved in a retail theft incident at the Walmart on North Central Avenue on February 2, 2025.

According to the police report, an off-duty Lieutenant was present at the store when he observed a male suspect exit without paying for merchandise. The suspect, identified as a 22-year-old man from Loyal, WI, loaded the stolen items into his vehicle before being confronted by a store employee and the Lieutenant. The situation escalated into a verbal altercation initiated by the suspect.

Responding officers conducted a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle, a tan Hyundai Sonata with Wisconsin plates, and placed him under arrest. He was transported to the Marshfield Police Department, where he was booked and later released. Authorities have recommended charges of disorderly conduct, retail theft, and possession of THC to the Marathon County District Attorney’s Office.

The stolen merchandise included a case of Purina Friskies canned cat food valued at $24.98.

The Marshfield Police Department has not released further details at this time.

12:11pm update: We asked about the cat. From the PD: “There was not expressed any immediate concern for the cat by the individuals involved.  It was found that  the suspect is gainfully employed so it is not believed that it was due to an act of desperation to get the cat fed for the reason it was stolen.”
