OnFocus Season Preview: Marion Mustangs Track and Field
Marion Track and Field Post Impressive Numbers

Ward Much is the new head coach for varsity track and field at Marion. He has taken over for  John Krueger, who retired this year.
Much completed the season preview below:
I am also coaching the Middle School Track and field team
while we are looking for a new coach for that team. I have been coaching for 6 years. I started as
a volunteer coach with the middle school track team then became head coach for the middle
school track team the next year. We built that team up which helped bring our numbers up on
varsity in later years. The varsity team did an excellent job last year, having players make it to
sectionals and having players place in conference. For middle school they shined, not just the
girls or boys win a meet but both winning the same meet.  We had a lot of broken records and
even had the boys 4X100 relay team place 15 in state, our 6th grade girl placing 8th in discus and
our boy triple jumper placing 2nd in state missing first by 1 inch.  This year will be even more
exciting. We have some substantial numbers this year and some very impressive talent. We are a
little shy about our boy numbers in both middle school and varsity but I feel that the boys we
have are willing to step up and help whatever they have to for the team. We co-op with Tigerton,
which helps our number and are great to work with. We are happy they are here working with us.
During practice you would not be able to tell if they were from different schools, they mesh well
with Marion, and we are stronger with them.   For number we have twenty-eight varsity kids so
far and nineteen middle school kids. That is forty-eight kids which makes a challenging practice
but luckily, I Have some great assistant coaches helping me which makes it more manageable. I
would like to give a big shout out to my assistant coaches: Jeremiah Rolf, Jesse Trebus, Holly
Meverden, and Angela Fox. We have some extraordinary talent this year and feel we should be
shooting for some conference champions and a run at state for a few varsity kids. Middle school
should have another momentous year and I am hoping to have a few more head down to state
again this year. We have some very competitive schools in our conference which we haven’t
been able to compete as much with but we have built this program up to be able to make a name
for ourselves out there and to let them know Marion is ready to do what it takes to compete with
these schools.  I am incorporating a lot of what we started in middle school and moving that to
varsity. I would like to see the track team going from just individual events to working as a team
and competing as a team. Varsity’s first track meets if the weather holds off is at Bowler in April
10that 4pm. The Varsity Home track meet is on April 28th at 4:00pm. We would love for anyone
that would love to cheer your Marion Mustangs on to come out. Middle Schools first track meet
is on April 17th at 4:00pm at Wittenberg. Middle school does not have any meetings at hme this year. I would love to thank John Krueger for the many years of coaching this track team. If it was  not for him, we might not even have a track program anymore. He helped many athletes compete there best and if it were not for him, I wouldn’t be here now. He helped me become a better coach and helped me learn what I needed to know. Thank you.
