OnFocus Season Preview: Rib Lake Redmen Softball

Coaching staff:

Craig Scheithauer (head coach), Kyley Williams (assistant coach), Dennis Scheithauer (assistant coach)

Key returners:

We are returning 7 starters from last season after losing Leah Chmielowiec and Josie Scheithauer  to graduation.
Seniors are:  Kiana Dallmann, Addison Gumz, and Lily Butler
Juniors are: Madilyn Blomberg, Kara Kennedy, Avery Niemi, Tahlia Scheithauer, and Tessa Weik
Other returning players:
Juniors: Payton Lueth
Sophomores:  Madelyn Dallmann, Abby Packenham, and Annalee Roder
All of these girls, as well as our lone freshman (Ava Dallmann), are competing for the spots in our lineup that were vacated when Leah and Josie graduated.

Key newcomers:

We have one new player this year, Ava Dallmann (freshman).

Conference outlook:

I like our chances in the Marawood North this season. We have been very competitive the past couple of years, just narrowly missing out on conference titles to Athens, who graduated several key players last spring. That said, I don’t expect any teams to hand us anything either. Chequamegon has proven to be a very competitive team in recent years, and I expect them to continue to be this year. Athens, in spite of losing several to graduation as mentioned earlier, has a nice group of young players that will want to continue their tradition of success. And Phillips, despite having lost some dominant players the last couple of seasons, always seems to be able to rebuild and compete at a high level. I don’t believe Prentice will have a team this year, so the conference will be made up of only four teams this year.

Again, I like our chances to compete for a conference title in the Marwood North, but I also know that we’ll have to earn it, and it will ultimately come down to which team(s) consistently play the best in the most important moments.

Keys to your success this season:

We have several effective pitchers, which is a luxury, but don’t really have a dominant pitcher that we could hand the ball to on a given day and just expect her to mow the other team down for a no-hitter and/or a shutout. We need to continue to throw strikes and mix pitches and speeds, and then we also need to play solid defense behind our pitchers.  This has been true for the last few years, and it remains that way this year too.

In addition to that, we need to continue to produce runs, whether that means hitting the ball to all fields, or playing “small ball” and dropping down bunts.  And, we need to run bases aggressively and effectively, and take advantage of our speed.
