Owen-Withee Claims Victory in Thrilling 2024 WIAA 8-Player State Championship
Wisconsin Rapids, WI (OnFocus) – The Owen-Withee Blackhawks capped an undefeated season by securing the 2024 WIAA 8-Player State Football Championship with a 50-36 victory over the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Titans on Saturday, November 16, at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.
Journey to the Championship
The Blackhawks (12-0) dominated the East Division of the North Central Conference, showcasing a potent offense and a resilient defense throughout the season. Their playoff run included decisive victories over Port Edwards (60-6) and McDonell Central (46-19), culminating in a narrow 23-21 semifinal win against Highland.
The Titans (10-2) emerged as runners-up in the Across the Bay Conference. Their playoff journey featured a 24-12 win over Wausaukee and a commanding 44-0 quarterfinal victory against Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah. In the semifinals, they defeated Northwood/Solon Springs 38-14 to earn their first appearance in the state championship game.
Championship Game Recap
The championship clash was a high-scoring affair, with both teams displaying offensive prowess. Owen-Withee’s standout running back, Mason Gay, delivered an exceptional performance, rushing 29 times for 321 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 11.1 yards per carry. Quarterback Dominic Sherwood contributed with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Tim Stock.
Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas showcased a balanced attack. Calvin Peters led the Titans with 122 passing yards and two touchdowns, completing 10 of 16 attempts. Jake Farley added 39 passing yards, connecting on both of his attempts. Max Peterson was a key target, recording multiple receptions, including a 29-yard catch.
The Blackhawks established an early lead, scoring 16 points in the first quarter and maintaining their advantage throughout the game. Despite a strong fourth-quarter effort from the Titans, who added 14 points, Owen-Withee’s consistent offensive execution secured their 50-36 victory.
